Have you heard?
Campaign for Wool are hosting their annual Wool Week! Wool Week will run from the 7th - 22nd October with an extended program of events and exhibitions which are designed to educate, inspire and promote the benefits of wool.
As lovers of wool ourselves, we thought that we would get involved and support Wool Week by writing our own piece about the unrivalled benefits of wool carpets.
Although synthetic carpets have come a long way in recent years, there really is no way to replicate the unique natural properties of wool. Here’s 5 reasons why we will always love wool carpets:
-
Renewable and Biodegradable
Every year sheep produce a new fleece, making wool a renewable fibre source. Campaign for Wool work to safeguard the environment to help make the wool industry sustainable for future generations.
At the end of its life, wool carpets can decompose and release valuable nutrients into the soil. This is unlike synthetic carpets which are extremely slow to degrade.
2. Easy Care
Synthetic carpets like to shout about how they are super easy to clean but the truth is, wool is just as easy to maintain.
As a natural fibre, wool is inherently
stain and soil repellent. It also traps dust in top layers until its vacuumed away and it doesn’t promote the growth of bacteria.
3. Natural Insulator
Wool is able to absorb and release water vapour as the humidity of the surrounding air rises and falls. Heat is generated and retained during the absorption phase making wool a
natural insulator.
This is a fantastic quality for carpets in particular because it helps to keep your home warmer and so energy costs and carbon emissions are reduced.
4. Fire Retardant
Wool has a high water and nitrogen content which makes is naturally fire-retardant. Because it’s a natural fibre, wool doesn’t melt and stick to the skin causing burns and it produces less noxious fumes than synthetic carpets. This makes wool carpets the top choice for hotels, schools and aeroplanes.
5. Resilient
Family homes are busy places so finding a carpet that will stand the test of time is very important. Wool carpets are a great choice because wool has a crimped structure that’s naturally elastic. As a result it will
stay looking and feeling good for up to 20 years.
