Apparently, British couples have an average of 2.4 children, but did you know there’s an average UK living room too? We recently did some digging into our most-searched and best-selling items to create a photo-fit of the nation’s most likely living room. Read on to see if your living room is in line with this year’s most popular style.

The photo-fit below was created using sales and search data over the last 12 months from Taskers.com, revealing that we’re most likely to have a grey two-seater sofa, a colourful accent chair, an industrial style coffee table and vintage style floor lamps.

Scoring three or more of the most popular furniture must-haves puts you top of the trends in the interior design stakes – so keep note of how you fare.

Sofa So Good

Our data shows us that more than over a quarter of Brits (28%) opted for a grey sofa in the last 12 months with neutral tones becoming a clear 2019 trend, with no sign of slowing down. Corner sofas have long been a staple feature in many family living rooms however this shape made up just 9% of our sales, with two and three-seat models becoming more popular.

Similarly, the once-popular black leather sofa has seen a significant decline making up just 3% of our sales. Although the subtle Scandi style is predominant, many buyers are opting for pops of colour with midnight blue (10%) and emerald green (8%) making the top five sofa and chair colour choices.

Navy and teal shades are proving to be very popular within the British home decor, and are often contrasted with bright, textured cushions against neutral sofa styles.

Single accent chairs are a great way to add a pop of colour to your interior and provide more floor space compared to a corner suite model. These are popular, especially in Edwardian properties, and complement original features within the living room such as fireplaces or cornices. We recommend choosing a modern patterned fabric or a vibrant block colour to truly make it a stand out feature for your living room (we love a mustard yellow or deep navy). We’ have seen a 30% surge in sales for accent chairs in bright colours, making them a must-have item for 2019. Have you got yours?

Fancy a Cuppa?

Coffee tables are a practical feature of any living room but choosing one that really makes a statement and can be used to display your favourite candle, diffuser and coffee table book is in vogue.

Our data finds that industrial and reclaimed styles are growing in popularity with the rustic wooden design making up a third of all purchases. Adding some simple accessories can help to tie the table into the room and give it some added dimension. Other popular designs included white minimal (22%) and contemporary glass (9%) which look beautiful with additional coffee tables books and trinkets. Finding one to fit into your living room theme is easier than ever.

Finishing Touches

When it comes to home lighting, the industrial trend leads the pack, with tripod film lights and anglepoise lamps quickly becoming a must-have for every home in 2019 and beyond. We recommend pairing these with Scandi style furnishings in neutral tones to help bring a warm feel to the room. Off-setting the industrial pieces with accessories such as candles and sheepskin throws or rugs can give an interesting and homely look. Contemporary chrome and glass free-standing models were also popular and look great in a more modern, city style living room.
